How to Install - Workshop

Most lingo maps can be found on the Steam Workshop. To add them to the game, simply subscribe to any maps you want to play, launch the game, and then select the map you want to play in the settings, under maps.

How to Install - Manual

  1. Download a map.
  2. In Lingo, go to Settings > Gameplay and click the View Game Data button. This will open your File Manager.
  3. There should be a folder here called maps (all lowercase). If not create one.
  4. Copy the map file into the Lingo/Maps/ folder
  5. Reload Settings (go to Main Menu and back), then open the Settings > Level menu in game.
  6. Select the new map.
  7. Start a New Game.
  8. Enjoy!

How to Create

Here is a link to our custom map guide. We use Godot as the map editor and Github to distribute and manage the code. If that sounds like something you're interested in, I'd love to hear from you!

Released Maps

Here you'll find a selection of maps ideal for players who are new to custom maps and mechanics.

Duolingo by Souvey

Duolingo (Don't Sue Me)

By Chris Souvey

Workshop Page | Direct Download

Features and "features":

  • 500 more puzzles using a tricky new mechanic inspired by cryptic crosswords
  • Totally new space to explore. Much more compact and easier to navigate than Level 1 and mostly without indistinct white hallways and confusing non-Euclidean tricks (but that means there's much less to discover and not many secrets).
  • Assumes completion of most of base Lingo Level 1 (there are no tutorials for the colors, and various references to your "favorite" words and puzzles from Level 1). Will likely be very unpleasant/unplayable if you haven't gotten to at least the THE END (probably post-THE MASTER is a better time to try)
  • Requires a much larger vocabulary (break out your dictionaries!) than Level 1, but has very few pronunciation puzzles, and the way the new mechanic works, you don't need to know all the words to solve the puzzles (so it's a fun way to learn some new words!)
  • Almost no purples (you're welcome). LOTS more grays (sorry!)
  • Includes the triumphant return of the THE EYES (THEY SEE!!!)

CODE is a uniquely linear map designed to test your ability to count from 0 to 9 four times in a row!
Inspired by the original Minecraft map by Jesper The End, but with no villagers. Sorry, not sorry.

  • Find each four digit code to progress through the map!
  • The codes are all unique, and you'll know for sure when you have the answers.
  • Bonus mechanics in the form of the brand new Floor Orange, patent pending!
  • Hidden walls, colour changing blocks, and 8 hours worth of rebuilding Level 1! No, I won't explain why.
  • Room after room of endless torture fun!

No, I don't have a job yet. Could you tell?

A small map with a lot of heart. Actually, maybe that's just pink. A small map with a lot of pink. Honestly and completely unconnected to the greater Lingoverse.

The maps here are among the best the Lingo Workshop has to offer.

Workshop Page

At long last, it's the sequel to Duolingo that nobody asked for!

  • Features
  • It's a Duolingo x Level 2 mashup inspired by the color lavender
  • A brand new overarching mechanic and dozens of new interconnected supporting mechanics: a mix of explicitly tutorialized and non-linear rule discovery
  • 1200+ puzzles (way way too many for one sitting! please take breaks!), but most are optional, so you can make it to The End without solving them all
  • Quite a bit harder than Duolingo, but hints are supported this time via the insert key: hint #1 disambiguates length, and hint #2 reveals the first letter
  • No prerequisites besides Level 1+2. The only custom color is Tea Green and there's an in-map tutorial
  • Ridiculously overdecorated environments for the first half, then barely decorated at all in the second half. The FPS got too low and I had to stop :(

Note: this map has unusually high system requirements; try dropping to 30fps in settings if you're having issues

The Library can’t just end, there must be something more. I need to uncover it, I’m compelled to. For the last 60 days I’ve confined myself to the Genius Lounge, scratching notes into the walls, trying to find answers. Finally, something. I’m not seeing things am I? There’s more to be found. So much more…

  • 372 puzzles, tucked away where they were forgotten
  • A new mechanic, formed from the coalescing of worn out cubes
  • Secrets, lost to time
  • Hunt, using eccentric clues
  • Knowledge, gained from all base game levels required

Oh thank god, my messages got through. The name's Rocky. I'm stuck here, yada yada. You get the picture. Could really use your help.
Here's the access key. By my estimations, there's 52 instances of numerical data stored here, and from what I can gather, about 140 in the tower. I don't know what else is in there, though.
It's just like the first facility- they're all just... numbers. Four digits each. You're gonna need to make it at least to the conservatory before you come here.
By the looks of it, it'll help to understand everything from the Pumpkin Patch, at the very least.
How else can I help, hmm... you're accessing this from a computer, right? You should probably keep your 'music settings' on, if I'm saying that right? Also, I'd recommend... uh... 'classic graphics style'? Whatever that means. I saw it on a poster.
The connection's closing soon. One last thing... good luck, and be careful.

Wait, that was two things...

The Museum is now open.

  • Four and a third hundred puzzles
  • Only Lingo Level 1 & 2 colours (but still some new mechanics within those colours)
  • Minor use of some mechanics out of Icely Palace (question marks, dots, and a pinch of non-black checkerboards)
  • No hellmaze shenanigans (but still some tricks, traps and surprises)
  • The vocabulary level for the puzzles is quite hard, but of course the Internet exists -- no, seriously, research is likely going to be required
  • Modular design allows for exploration even if you're stuck on something

Make sure you come to check out all the exhibits, and build your answers from what you find there.

Ice Indoctrination + To The Top Edition

  • Over 1000 panels
  • Every area in Lingo is now different and larger than the base game
  • Much longer playtime (uh, including the loading time)
  • New mechanics and extensions to underexplored base game mechanics
  • The amount of design space this explores makes it almost like Lingo Level 2 at this point
  • Please don't cheese your way onto the roof within 5 minutes, at least wait until you have no more areas left to find, I can't deal with all these new physics problems ok
  • Check out my puzzle game channel even though you likely already know about it

This map uses only white and black in the most cursed ways, a culmination of months of horribly cursed synonyms and antonyms. The mechanics are not as 100% consistent/structured as I would have liked, but there are still some great moments in here. It took a while for me to be as happy with it as my other ice maps.

  • Features
  • It's a Duolingo x Iceland mashup inspired by the color UV
  • A brand new overarching mechanic and dozens of new interconnected supporting mechanics: a mix of explicitly tutorialized and non-linear rule discovery
  • 12+ puzzles (way way too many for one sitting! please take breaks!), but most are optional, so you can make it to the end without solving them all
  • Hints are NOT supported this time: souvey ruined hinting in Duolingo with the custom placeholder lengths that were underscores instead of dashes for some reason, so NO INSERT CHEATING
  • No prerequisites besides Level 1+2. The only custom color is Ultraviolet and there's an in-map tutorial
  • Ridiculously overdecorated environments for the first half, then barely decorated at all in the second half. The FPS got too low and I had to stop :(

Note: this map has unusually low system requirements; try dropping to 500fps in settings if you're having issues

Archipelago Randomizer

Archipelago

Workshop Page

Archipelago is an open-source project that supports randomizing a number of different games and combining them into one cooperative experience. Items from each game are hidden in other games. For more information about Archipelago, you can look at their website.
This is a "map" that modifies Lingo so that it can be played as part of an Archipelago multiworld game.
The readme for the project can be found here
Lingo is included with Archipelago 0.4.4 and later. You can set up a Lingo world on the Archipelago website here.
If you want to play solo, fill out the above form and click Generate Game. It will provide you with the connection details that you can input into the Lingo mod.
If you want to play with others, each player should fill out the form and click Export Settings to get a yaml file. Yaml files for other Archipelago-supported games can be used too. One player should put all of the yaml files into a zip file, and upload it on the Host Game page on the Archipelago website.
An automatic progress tracker is also available here.

Noteworthy maps which didn't fit into any other categories.

level 1 legacy

Level 1 Legacy

Workshop Page | Direct Download

Feeling nostalgic? Level 1 Legacy is a copy of the main game map as it existed at release. A few notable updates are listed below.

  • Original versions of the hedge maze and the crossroads area
  • More punishing versions of various puzzles, such as those in the purple room
  • Upgraded gameplay settings and engine optimizations are still in place
White Baba You by Souvey

White Baba You

By Chris Souvey

January 4, 2024

Workshop Page

What do you get when you cross a Lingo and a Baba is You? To get the other side!
Gray isn't meta enough for you? Fine then, you make the rules.

Requirements:

  • A decent CPU. The physics simulations on large levels are performance-intensive.
  • Level 1 and Level 2 mechanics. No customs required.
  • Basic understanding of Baba is You gameplay. Note: you don't need to have the nouns/property names memorized -- they will always be clued in some way before you're expected to use them. But you are expected to know some basics, like that only "you" is able to "win". Don't rely too heavily on your Baba experience though: almost all the properties have been adapted and changed.
  • A delete/backspace key. You know about unsolving, right?
  • Beginner platforming/reflexes: no intended solutions require precise or finicky timing/jumps, but there is some light platforming. If a jump or such isn't very obviously doable and reliable to achieve, it's not required.
  • Patience and creativity. This is an extremely challenging map that jumps right into some tough levels (including the very first one!). There aren't really intro levels and the mechanics are not explicitly tutorialized: you're expected to be perceptive, experiment, and learn how the rules work.

Features 30+ levels, 10 achievements, and endgame tomfoolery

Multiverse 11B by Chris Souvey

Multiverse 11B: Prologue

By Chris Souvey

January 21, 2023

Workshop Page | Direct Download

He opened his eyes, squinting against the sterile, shadowless light of the interior. His gaze was drawn to a panel in front of him, which bore the words "HI" in a familiar font. He felt a strange sense of comfort in the familiarity of the situation; perhaps this wasn't so different from home after all.

This map is theoretically being released episodically, though it's unclear when/whether it will continue. The current version (Prologue) has 174 puzzles.

August 23, 2023

Workshop Page

This map is the result of the first Lingonberry Jam -- a collaborative mapmaking project held in August 2023 with 31 participants. Each person had 1 week to create a small room with the theme "Eyes Tell Lies", followed by an optional second week of collaborative mashups made by 6 teams of 2-3. All the rooms were then assembled together into this map for your enjoyment! If you want to participate next time, be sure to join the Lingo Discord
Truth hurts, so take a break from the pain, play this map, and embrace the lies eyes

/Features:

  • A carefully crafted world with a bunch of random rooms shoved into it
  • More puzzles than Lingo Level 1
  • More eyes than the rest of Lingo combined (ommetaphobia content warning: SO MANY EYES!!!)
  • 31 individual rooms and 6 unlockable mashup rooms (targeting <30 minutes of difficulty each)
  • Mostly Level 1 and 2 colors, but some rooms may require knowledge of cobalt, plum, tea green, cyan, pink, and salmon
  • RULES ARE INCONSISTENT (each individual room was designed independently)
  • Also includes: candy, a maze, secrets, ghosts, laser beams, a rainbow, chess battle advanced, and lies

Room Contributors: brendangelo, clpb, daniyar, dee, es8730, gl!tch, haubergier, hizami, icely, kf01, kiulu, kiwi, klinger, maxboi, memorybones, moth, notwithouttext, npldart, phenomist, platform, quartz, randomnat, randp, roy, sacrifice, seven, shinkai, sirquaren, souvey, sparktail, and tetsu
